How to Prepare for Your First Laser Tattoo Removal Session

So, you've decided it's time to say goodbye to that tattoo. Maybe it's a name that belongs firmly in the past, or a design you simply grew out of. Whatever the reason — no judgement here! — laser tattoo removal is a brilliant option, and a bit of preparation can make the whole experience smoother.
Keep the Skin in Good Shape Beforehand
In the two weeks leading up to your appointment, treat the skin over your tattoo with a little extra care.
- Avoid sun exposure on that area. Tanned or sunburnt skin is more sensitive and can react unpredictably to the laser.
- Skip the fake tan as well — self-tanner and the laser are not friends.
- Keep the skin well moisturised every day. Healthy, hydrated skin responds better to treatment.
- If you shave the area, do it gently and at least 24 hours before your session.
On the Day of Your Appointment
A few simple things to tick off before you head in:
- Arrive with clean skin. No creams, deodorants, or perfume on the area being treated.
- Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the tattoo — you'll thank yourself for not wearing a tight roll-neck if it's on your neck.
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. It genuinely helps your body process everything more efficiently.
- If you're a bit nervous about discomfort, you can apply a numbing cream about an hour before your session. Just ask us about this in advance so we can advise you on the right product.
What to Avoid Before Your Session
- Blood-thinning medications and supplements (like aspirin or fish oil) can increase bruising — check with your GP if you're unsure.
- Alcohol — give it a miss for at least 24 hours beforehand.
- Retinol or strong active skincare on the treated area for at least a week prior.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Laser tattoo removal works by breaking down the ink particles in your skin so your body can naturally flush them away. It's a gradual process — most tattoos need multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart. Darker inks on lighter skin tend to respond quickest, but every tattoo (and every person) is different.
Results build up session by session, so patience is your best friend here. Many clients are pleasantly surprised by how much fading they see even after the first treatment.
After Your Session Matters Too
Prep doesn't stop when you walk out the door. We'll give you full aftercare advice at your appointment, but in general — keep the area clean, out of the sun, and well moisturised.
