How to Prepare for Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment

How to Prepare for Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment

So you've booked your laser hair removal session — brilliant decision! Before you come in, there are a few simple things to do that will help the treatment work its best and keep your skin happy. Nothing complicated, I promise.

Shave the Area Beforehand

Shave the area you're having treated the day before your appointment — or on the morning of, if your skin isn't too sensitive. This is really important. The laser targets the hair follicle beneath the skin, so long hairs above the surface just get in the way. Waxing or plucking, on the other hand, removes the root entirely, which means there's nothing for the laser to actually target. Stick to shaving only.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Try to stay out of strong sunlight for at least two weeks before your session. Tanned or sunburned skin can be more sensitive during the treatment. If you've been on holiday recently or spent a lot of time outdoors, just let us know — we'll advise you on the best way forward.

Fake Tan? Give It a Miss

Self-tanning products — sprays, mousses, gradual tanners — need to be fully faded before treatment. They can interfere with how the laser reads the skin and may cause irritation. Give yourself at least two weeks after the last application.

Skip the Creams and Lotions on the Day

On the day of your appointment, come in with clean, product-free skin on the treatment area. No perfumed body lotions, deodorants (if you're having underarms done), or numbing creams unless we've specifically recommended them. Clean skin simply responds better.

Stay Hydrated and Moisturised in the Days Before

Well-hydrated skin tends to handle laser treatments more comfortably. So in the days leading up to your session, drink plenty of water and use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser on the area. Think of it as giving your skin a little head start.

A Few More Things Worth Knowing

  • Avoid heat treatments like saunas or hot baths for 24 hours before your session.
  • Let us know about any medications you're taking — some can increase skin sensitivity.
  • Hormonal changes (like pregnancy) may affect suitability for treatment, so always keep us in the loop.
  • Don't wax or use hair removal creams in the weeks leading up to your appointment.

On the Day Itself

Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment — especially if you're having legs or a larger area treated. You'll thank yourself afterwards. And don't worry if you feel a little nervous before your first session. It's completely normal, and we'll walk you through everything before we start.

Laser hair removal works best as a course of treatments, so consistency really does pay off. The more prepared you are each time, the better your results will be.
