Carbon peel facial in Perth, Scotland
A carbon peel is a laser facial for skin that looks congested, shiny or rough — enlarged pores, blackheads, uneven texture. It is quick, there is no downtime, and skin looks brighter the same day. It is not a treatment for deep scarring or active cystic acne.
A thin layer of liquid carbon is applied and left to settle into the pores. The laser is then drawn across the skin: the carbon absorbs the energy and is vaporised, taking dead cells, oil and debris out of the pores with it. The warmth also gives a mild stimulus to the deeper layers of the skin.
The immediate effect is cosmetic and fairly reliable — skin looks clearer and reflects light better straight away, which is why it is a common choice before an event. The changes worth having in texture and oiliness come from a short course, usually four to six treatments a fortnight apart, rather than from one visit.
It suits oily and combination skin best. If your skin is very dry or reactive, I will usually suggest a different treatment at the consultation — one better suited to what it needs.
What a session looks like

Consultation and patch test: I check your skin type, go through medications and sun exposure, and test a small area. Required before the first treatment.

Cleanse: makeup and surface oil removed.

Carbon layer: the lotion is applied and left for a few minutes to settle into the pores.

Laser passes: a warm, prickling sensation with a light snapping sound. The whole face takes around half an hour.

Afterwards: skin may look slightly pink for an hour or so. You can wear makeup the same day; use SPF.

Before you book
Not suitable on recently tanned skin, during pregnancy, or with certain photosensitising medications or recent oral acne treatment. A carbon peel improves surface texture, congestion and oiliness — it does not treat deep scarring, and it is not a substitute for medical treatment of active cystic acne.
